How publishing works

Open Research Europe operates a post-publication peer review model (Publish, Review, Curate), meaning that articles are published before peer review takes place. To ensure the quality of the papers published, every submission is subject to rigorous prepublication checks. These ensure that all articles adhere to ORE’s guidelines and policies, which are informed by international publishing standards.
Article processing charges (APCs)
There are no author-facing costs associated for publishing in Open Research Europe (please however note the eligibility criteria). All associated costs for publishing on ORE are covered by the Funders' Group collectively.
Prepublication process
Prepublication checks conducted directly after submission help ensure the editorial quality of work published in Open Research Europe. ORE’s editorial team checks each article to make sure that it adheres to the author guidelines and the editorial policies, including the data policies. The team also checks that the article is written in good English, so that its content can be fully assessed by peer reviewers and readers.
ORE’s full list of prepublication checks include:
- Author eligibility for publication
- Article type selection and scope adherence
- Text and image plagiarism checks
- Image integrity screening
- Basic English language check
- Adherence to data reporting standards
- Adherence to related ethical policies and guidelines
- Reported data public availability
- Bibliography reference checks
- Adherence to third party reuse licensing
If a submission fails initial checks, it will either be returned to the authors to address the issues, or if the issues are not resolvable, the article will be declined for publication at this point.
Production
Once an article has undergone prepublication checks and is approved for publication, it is passed onto the production team for copyediting and typesetting. Authors will receive an email notification when the proof is ready for review.
When checking proofs, there may be some queries from the production team. Authors should make sure that they respond to all queries when submitting corrections. The following details should be checked:
- All author names are spelt correctly;
- Authors are listed in the correct order;
- Affiliations for all authors are accurate;
- The information in the ‘Copyright’ section is correct;
- All figures and figure legends are correct;
- All external files, including data files, are correct;
- All links within the article are working and correct.
It is the responsibility of the authors to check the proof thoroughly. ORE cannot be held responsible for errors that remain in the published version.
Authors are asked to return their corrections within one week of receiving the proof. If authors are unable to meet this deadline, encounter any problems, or have further questions, they should contact the production team and reference the article ID in all correspondence. In the event of a non-response, the article file will be closed.
Licensing (articles, data and peer reviews)
Open Research Europe articles are published under a CC BY license, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited, and leaves the copyright of the article with the current copyright holder (usually the author or their institution). As the specific version of the CC BY license applied to specific content may change due to periodic updates, the license is shown below the article abstract.
Data associated with Open Research Europe articles are made available, where possible, under the terms of a Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication (CC0 license). This facilitates and encourages data re-use and helps prevent the problems of attribution stacking when combining multiple datasets each authored by multiple authors that use multiple different licenses.
Peer reviews that are published with a given article are available under the CC BY license.
