Abstract

The integration of blockchain technology (BCT) within the banking sector is transforming how organisations achieve operational efficiency and trust. However, the adoption of BCT in the Indian banking sector remains underexplored, particularly regarding organisational alignment and performance. This study explores the critical factors of technology and organisation influencing the adoption of blockchain and its effects on banking performance, with a distinct interest in the moderating effects of IT alignment. Also, to explore whether perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use act as mediators between blockchain technology and banking performance. Using the Technology-Organisation-Environment (TOE) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), data were collected from 326 professionals working in prominent Indian banks and FinTech companies. Analysis of the relationships was conducted with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results of this study show that technology readiness significantly influences both perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, while the regulatory environment significantly affects perceived usefulness. Furthermore, IT alignment significantly moderates the relationship between blockchain technology and business performance, and perceived usefulness serves as a significant mediator, whereas perceived ease of use does not significantly mediate this relationship. The study provides a theoretical contribution by incorporating the TAM and TOE models in a banking context and serves to inform practitioners by providing insights into blockchain adoption strategies in Indian financial institutions.

Amendment

Abstract was entirely revised followed by revision in introduction section with In the context of Indian banking, unique socio-technical and regulatory challenges such as strict compliance requirements, legacy IT systems, and data privacy concerns further complicate the adoption process. There is a gap in empirical research that examines these adoption factors in the Indian banking environment, which is situated in separate legal, cultural, and technological contexts from those of Western economies. . Although studies such as Garg et al. [22] and Jena [17] have examined blockchain adoption and performance in Indian banking and financial institutions, important research gaps remain. Garg et al. [22] focused on the relationship between blockchain capabilities, competitive advantage, and organisational performance, while Jena [17] investigated blockchain adoption using an extended UTAUT framework. However, neither study examined the role of IT Alignment as a moderating factor influencing blockchain-related outcomes. Furthermore, previous studies have not compared the relative influence of Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Performance Expectancy (PE) as competing predictors within the same research model. This study addresses these gaps by examining the moderating role of IT Alignment and comparing the effects of PU and PE in explaining blockchain adoption and performance outcomes in the Indian banking context.

Literature review has been updated and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)-Based Studies. Many other major revisions has been carried out.
