Abstract

Liquid metals have been chosen as primary coolant of innovative nuclear systems under current development. They present a very high thermal conductivity and hence a very low molecular Prandtl number. This feature challenges the modeling of turbulent thermal flows applying the Reynolds analogy. This paper addresses this challenge. A new formula for the turbulent Prandtl number is derived in terms of local variables available from two-equations turbulence models. The derivation is a direct consequence of the expected square additivity of the molecular and flow parameters defining the effective viscosity and the effective conductivity. The formula does not degenerate and leads to a Kays like formulation if approximated. While constrained by the quality of the turbulent viscosity modeling, it has the potential to improve the numerical simulation of turbulent thermal flows.

Amendment

Only the wording has been touched in an attempt to clarify and ease the reading. This as been done quite extensively all over the document and we indicate only the most relevant ones.

In the introduction:
The main hypothesis (Pr0=0.85) is now clearly stated.
The justification/validation of the hypothesis is also anticipated.

In the Turbulent Prandt number derivation:
The second half of the first paragraph was not strictly necessary and is potentially controversial. It has been removed.
Several rewording with more care to avoid an excessive or unfit use of the word "turbulent".
Names have been given: "flow viscosity" to nu0 and "flow diffusivity" to alpha0.
To limit misunderstanding, a sentence has been added: "Therefore, the representations with (νt, αt) and with (ν0,α0) are completely equivalent and easily interchangeable."
Removed a sentence after formula 10, become useless now that Pr0=0.85 is already stated.

In the discussion:
The first paragraph has been modified to enhance clarity.
The connection between formula 16 and formula 17 has been explicitated
Removed another sentence second paragraph after formula 17, also useless now that Pr0=0.85 is already stated.

In the conclusion:
the word "effective" has replaced "turbulent and molecular" as well as "turbulent and thermal".
One missing "turbulent" has been added.
The last sentence has been complemented with a reminder of the title meaning.
