Abstract

This study proposes the validation of the Virtual Spatial Configuration Task (VSCT), a novel task designed to evaluate cognitive map formation abilities in participants. Addressing a notable gap in spatial cognition research, particularly in the assessment of higher-level spatial abilities in 3D environments, the VSCT offers a virtual reality (VR) approach that allows users to explore and recall spatial relationships between landmarks. This task is particularly innovative for populations with impaired mobility, as it simplifies navigation by restricting movement to rotational exploration, thus improving accessibility and reducing motion sickness. Furthermore, the VSCT could serve a dual purpose: assessing spatial orientation skills while also providing a platform for training and improving these skills post-injury. The potential applications of this tool extend to neurorehabilitation and other therapeutic interventions, offering an engaging, immersive method for enhancing spatial abilities.

Clarification of the SCT: We included a detailed description of the Spatial Configuration Task (SCT), outlining its implementation and role in assessing spatial cognitive abilities. We clarified that the SCT is a 2D, screen-based task and described its conceptual and methodological similarities and differences with the Virtual Spatial Configuration Task (VSCT), providing readers with clearer context for our VR adaptation.

Expanded theoretical background: The manuscript now includes a deeper discussion of allocentric and egocentric spatial navigation strategies, elaborating on how these are activated in both the SCT and VSCT. We incorporated additional references and theoretical insights to support the rationale behind our VR-based tool.

Refined sample size justification: We revised our sample size section to report the parameters used for the a priori power analysis, including alpha, power, and effect size. We also clarified how the chosen effect size reflects both theoretical expectations and the logistical constraints common in VR research involving human participants.

Improved methodological detail: We enhanced the description of our experimental procedures, specifying the structure of training and testing phases, the design features of the virtual environments, and the metrics used to assess participant performance. We also clarified the distinctions between control and experimental conditions and how these support tests of convergent and discriminant validity.

Language and formatting: Minor language edits were made throughout to improve clarity, grammar, and consistency. All figures and references were reviewed and corrected where needed.
