Introducing Collections on Open Research Europe

A few months ago we discussed the different ways you can explore content on Open Research Europe. We are now pleased to introduce another method of viewing content – Collections! These are compilations of content relating to a specific Horizon 2020 or Horizon Europe-funded community, project or conference. They allow us to bring attention to specific areas of interest to the relevant communities.

These initial collections were devised by compiling information from a number of different sources. Existing content was grouped by subject area to identify potential collection ideas based on our existing papers. The funding landscape of Horizon 2020 was also investigated to identify main areas of interest for prospective authors. The focus areas of Horizon Europe were also considered to ensure our collections are up to date to provide a home for the future direction of Horizon funded research.

These Collections aim to create a dedicated space within Open Research Europe where readers can find content related to their specific areas of interest. By linking all this related content together within a collection, we can ensure our readers are seeing all our relevant content without them having to search for it!

Finally, the Collections are also trackable – meaning readers can now identify the Collection that is most relevant to their own research and be alerted every time new content is published in this area. This provides a much more specific tracking functionality than was previously available!

In this blog post we’ll delve into what you can expect from each of our current Collections but keep your eyes peeled for new Collections launching soon.

Bacteria and Infectious Diseases

This collection focuses on understanding bacteria and disease hosts’ further, including their diagnosis and potential treatments to reduce and/or prevent the life-threatening consequences of their spread.

Bacteria and Infectious Diseases welcomes research on animals and cells, with effects on food and humans, with one publication from doctoral student Paula Kurittu and colleagues highlighting the potential of interspecies transmission of enzymes producing Escherichia coli to date.

Cancer

Whilst the diagnosis, prognosis and treatments have improved over time, medical researchers and professionals continue to dedicate many resources to save and improve the lives of cancer patients. The open dissemination of such findings is pertinent to their successful implementation. The Cancer collection welcomes everything that is related to cancer, including diagnosis, treatments and management. It is mainly going to feature human cell and clinical studies, but mouse models are also welcome. So far, Dr. Wang and co. demonstrated the feasibility of self-sampling tests and increases in requests for such tests in high-risk women. Meanwhile, Dr. Thorat and co. provided key recommendations for safeguarding SARS-Cov-2 infection risk and cancer management in their recent review.

Disease Mechanisms, Management and Treatment

Ranging from Alzheimer’s to stroke, the collection on Disease Mechanisms, Management and Treatment broadly concentrates on human diseases and how life with these can be improved. It will host research about mechanisms and case studies, as well as the possible use of technological advances. In one of the first publications on the platform, and first in this collection, Prof. Borm showed the similarities between adverse outcome pathways in two very different areas of particle response in the human body.

Energy Systems Modelling

The Energy Systems Modelling collection will be publishing papers from this year’s EMP-E conference. The annual EMP-E conference brings together Europe’s energy modelling community over a three-day period in a forum for deep exchange of research and modelling practice and varied discussions.

This Case Study published as part of this collection demonstrates an effective approach in building a new relationship between science and society, in which the desire of citizens to participate actively in knowledge production meets the needs of researchers.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology includes a range of technologies at the nanoscale, such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, genomics, neuroscience, robotics, and information technologies. It is a key enabling technology and has great potential for addressing societal challenges including energy supply and health care.

The Nanotechnology collection explores the diverse array of solutions offered by nanotechnology in areas such as medicine, electronics, energetics, food, industry, information technology, astronautics, and communication, and also any regulatory and ethical challenges in what remains an emerging field.

For example, this Research Article proposes a method based on point scanning (confocal) microscope that allows resolution below 90nm on any sample and demonstrates imaging capabilities on living cells and nanomaterials.

Research Culture

This interdisciplinary collection, already including nine articles of varied types, spotlights the latest developments in how researchers conduct research in today’s digital world. It focuses on issues such as data sharing and management, public engagement with research, research collaboration, and the impact of COVID on research and researchers

Robotics

Our Robotics collection highlights the array of robotics research and its impact and potential to advance existing human-based activities as well as offer unique solutions which would otherwise be impossible without the involvement of machines and artificial intelligence.

This Review aims to make robotics education inclusive by introducing a paradigm shift inspired by sound pedagogies and emerging educational trends and focused on creativity and other 21st-century skills. It addresses several questions and dilemmas related to the technologies currently in use in robotics education and the kind of technologies that can best support the proposed paradigm.

Safeguarding Cultural Heritage

This collection brings together research on the crucial topic of protecting Europe’s incredibly rich and diverse cultural heritage. This cultural heritage includes landscapes, buildings and monuments as well as intangible cultural heritage such as oral tradition, music and food culture.

The question of how digital technologies can play a vital role for the preservation of Europe’s cultural heritage is central to this collection, for example, this article on the use of Google Earth technology for landscape heritage management.

Smart Cities

The Smart Cities collection will highlight progress made by smart city projects across Europe and it will build towards a more holistic understanding of the various challenges encountered in implementing smart city solutions.

It will investigate how Smart City projects address the challenges of growing urban populations, and the potential to improve urban infrastructure. Examples of Smart City projects include smart parking, traffic management, street lighting, intelligent transport systems, infrastructure monitoring and smart utility metering for electricity and water.

This Methods article introduces nature based solution (NBS) projects as a viable response to urban challenges created by global climate change. Based on the proposed assessment framework, the paper scrutinizes the gap linked to the identification of NBS environmental performance and its monitoring in the context of sustainable urban management practices.

The Mind, Mental Health, and Behaviour

Bringing together cutting-edge research on the human mind, mental health, and behavior, from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives, this collection addresses critical challenges facing European society today such as the promotion of child mental health, technology and mental health, and addressing inequality and mental health. This article, for example, looks at the promotion of mental health in the workplace. We welcome all research connected to the study, prevention, or mitigation of mental health issues.

As we’ve discussed, these new Collections are compilations of content relating to a specific Horizon 2020 or Horizon Europe-funded community, project or conference. View them all here.
