Open research for all
Since launching in March 2021, Open Research Europe (ORE) has become an established publishing venue for Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe funded researchers, gained the DOAJ seal and launched many collections.
ORE is an innovative open access publishing platform. Our publishing model is rapid, open and transparent, and we publish a diverse range of peer-reviewed research, making it easier for beneficiaries to comply with the open access terms of their funding. ORE accepts a variety of article types, from traditional articles to research outputs such as Software Tools, Data Notes, and Method Articles, to provide authors and experts with the best opportunities to communicate their discoveries to multidisciplinary audiences.

Research and distribution
Throughout 2021, ORE has celebrated several significant milestones, illustrating our dedication to rapid and open research along with quality and rigorous peer review.
In September, we celebrated the publication of our hundredth article, A new nomenclature for the livestock-associated Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex based on phylogenomics and since then, over 60 articles have now passed peer review and been indexed and deposited in trustable repositories such as Zenodo, OpenAire and Google Scholar.
ORE supports a diverse range of researcher communities by distributing high quality articles and providing a broad range of article types. The platform goes beyond the traditional research article and enables researchers to rapidly publish a variety of article types that support the pillars of our publishing model: openness and transparency. These include Method Articles and Data Notes, both of which provide credit to a variety of research contributors.
The chart below shows the overall published research for 2021*, highlighting the most and least published article types on ORE.

We continue to demonstrate our dedication to openly publishing high quality research and findings by ensuring articles move efficiently through our publication process. The chart below gives you an overview of how we’ve been supporting these efforts in research publication.

Alongside our rapid publication process, ORE is also committed to making your research visible and discoverable. Over the last year, we’ve launched a number of collections that focus on specific areas within communities. Two of the most prominent collections include:
Energy Systems Modelling
The Energy Systems Modelling collection highlights papers from the EMP-E 2021 conference. This conference brings together Europe’s energy modeling community in a forum for deep exchange of research and modeling practice and varied discussions.
Research Culture
The Research Culture collection supports and accelerates research by providing rapid, open access publication with links to all underlying data, encompassing articles from different disciplines and regions around the world. This collection spotlights the latest developments in research culture in today’s digital world.
The DOAJ seal
In 2021, ORE was indexed in DOAJ (the Directory of Open Access Journals) and awarded the DOAJ seal. The DOAJ Seal is awarded to journals that demonstrate best practice in open access publishing. Around 10% of journals indexed in DOAJ have been awarded the Seal. We are proud to be part of the DOAJ community, giving quality assurance and greater exposure and impact to the work of our researchers, authors, reviewers, and experts.
Spotlight articles of 2021
Here are some of the key articles that have been published on ORE over the past year and that have gained numerous mentions across social media and online news outlets:
- Naïve, unenculturated chimpanzees fail to make and use flaked stone tools (Elisa Bandini, Alba Motes-Rodrigo, William Archer et al.). This research found that the extinct sabre-toothed cats are not only very different from all living cat species but also very different from one another.
- Fewest switches surface hopping with Baeck-An couplings (Mariana T. do Casal, Josene M. Toldo, Max Pinheiro Jr et al.). As one reviewer says, “This approach is especially powerful as it can enable surface hopping dynamics using only predicted energies and forces.”
- A systematic review of automated journalism scholarship: guidelines and suggestions for future research (Samuel Danzon-Chambaud). This article is a helpful review of how the field of digital journalism studies engages with the emergent phenomenon of automated journalism.
- Spontaneity of nuclear fusion: a qualitative analysis via classical thermodynamics (Silvano Tosti). One reviewer explains how this research “reports a thermodynamic analysis for nuclear reactions, including eventual entropic effects, usually not considered in this kind of process.”

Looking forward to 2022
As the New Year is just around the corner, we’re busy planning our 2022 activities that we will be delivering to our research communities, including a review of the key insights and learnings from our first author survey.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our dedicated reviewers, expert authors and all those people who have supported ORE throughout 2021. We hope you all have happy and safe holidays.
