This month marks one year of Open Research Europe, the European Commission’s open access publishing platform, which launched in March 2021. Open Research Europe is an open access publishing venue for all Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe funded researchers across various disciplines.

In the past 12 months, Open Research Europe received the DOAJ seal, an award that ensures quality assurance in research, and the platform reached nearly 200 published research articles. Recently, the platform was accepted for indexing in Inspec and added to three nationally approved journal lists: South African DHET list, Norwegian NSD, and Finnish Julkaisufoorumi. The platform has also passed 100+ articles through the open peer review process.
Supporting all fields of research
Open Research Europe is an established and trusted open access venue for Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe funded research. The platform continues to support researchers across all career stages, from Ph.D. students to early career, senior, and independent researchers, to rapidly and transparently publish all research outputs.
12 months of Open Research Europe
Over the past 12 months, Open Research Europe has proven to be a trustworthy publishing venue for a wide range of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe funded researchers. The figures below show how the platform has published research:
| Total number of submissions | 325 |
| Total number of publications | 196 |
| Publications passed peer review | 93 |
| Total number of views | 14340 |
| Total number of mentions (news/Twitter) | 243 mentions on Altmetrics |
| Downloads | 3806 |
Many researchers chose Open Research Europe to publish their research with the platform over the last year, and according to the 2021 author survey, many authors would publish with Open Research Europe again. Readership of the articles has also increased, both before and after peer review, highlighting the benefit of the post-publication peer review model. Open Research Europe will continue to build upon the above outputs, increase the number of peer reviewed articles, grow article engagements, and better distribute research to relevant communities.
Introducing Community Gateways on Open Research Europe
In Spring 2022, Open Research Europe’s Community Gateways will bring new methods of finding relevant research to the platform’s communities. The existing Gateways group articles by the relevant funded program areas of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe. For the new Community Gateways, Open Research Europe will collaborate with active scholars in the different research areas to ensure the distribution of quality research and build them into hubs of interesting content for researchers in this field. This expert guidance will help us launch new collections on relevant topics and ongoing developments in the field.
Future plans
Open Research Europe is fully committed to being a reputable publishing venue for relevant beneficiaries and a resource hub for all researchers. It will increase outreach initiatives to bring fresh perspectives to essential aspects in scholarly communication such as open data, open access, and research transparency. Furthermore, Open Research Europe will continue to work with well-known and relevant repositories to be indexed by them for greater platform visibility.
Make sure you stay connected throughout the year as more opportunities for researchers to get involved with the platform will become available.
