Abstract

This exploratory study examines the socio-territorial conflicts arising from the competition between quarry mining and nature conservation in the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park in Portugal. The study utilises content analysis of semi-structured interviews with stakeholders and the snowball technique to estimate the population size and understand the relationships between actors. The findings reveal tensions between mining companies, park authorities, and local communities, resulting in socio-territorial conflicts in the protected area. The study highlights the need for clear outcomes from local development initiatives and the challenges of reconciling mining and conservation in land-use planning policies. This research contributes to the literature gap on non-metalliferous mining activities and environmental conflicts in the study area. Overall, it emphasises the unequal distribution of social and environmental costs associated with extractive activities, underscoring the importance of understanding the dynamics that influence socio-territorial conflicts in highly protected areas.

Amendment

This revised version of the manuscript incorporates substantive changes aimed at improving clarity, analytical coherence, and methodological transparency, in response to editorial and reviewer feedback.
The title was not modified. The abstract was substantially revised and restructured to more clearly present the research background, objectives, methodological approach, main findings, and conclusions, ensuring closer alignment with the content of the article and the overall structure of the manuscript.
Several sections of the main text were reorganised and expanded. The introduction and conceptual framework were strengthened to better define socio-territorial conflicts and to emphasise the unequal distribution of environmental and social costs associated with extractive activities. The literature review was expanded to more clearly identify the existing gap regarding non-metalliferous mining and environmental conflicts in protected areas, particularly within the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park.
The methodology section was clarified and developed in greater detail, including additional information on case selection criteria, the use of snowball sampling to identify key stakeholders, qualitative data analysis procedures, the application of QGIS for spatial analysis, and ethical considerations.
The results and discussion sections were revised to improve the presentation and interpretation of the qualitative findings, strengthening the links between the coding system, empirical evidence, and the analytical discussion. Figures and tables were adjusted for clarity and consistency with the revised text, without the inclusion of new data.
