Abstract

In order to achieve sustainable development, it is imperative to ensure that the competencies of the labour force are in accordance with the changing requirements of the business sector, all the while confronting the worldwide issues delineated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This methodological paper investigates the potential for a competencies-gap analysis to significantly impact the development of seventy specialised courses by serving as its foundational instrument. These courses function as catalysts for cultivating research collaborations between individuals and organisations, thus promoting the integration of endeavours in the pursuit of implementing the SDGs. The methodology describes in detail a methodical process for identifying competencies shortages in the workforce and need for upskilling and reskilling and designing courses strategically to close these gaps. By effectively incorporating educational initiatives with industry demands, this framework fosters a combination of improved workforce preparedness and an environment that promotes sustainability and innovation.

Plain Language Summary

Though they impact everyone, climate change and pollution harm the most vulnerable individuals the hardest, which causes increased health concerns, economic troubles, and less employment. For this reason, nations all over the world—including those in Europe—have consented to act to combat climate change and preserve the environment. By changing to cleaner, greener ways of living and working, one key objective is to limit global temperature rise and lower harmful emissions. Making this change depends on ensuring individuals have the appropriate knowledge and training for future employment—particularly those oriented on sustainability. To assist this green transformation, the European Union has started several projects like the Green Deal and the European Skills Agenda.

That initiative includes the CATALYST program. Designed to assist individuals and companies learn how to be more sustainable, creative, and ready for future problems, it provides 70 new training courses. These classes address sustainable development, circular economy, and organisational and personal change management. They also interact directly with the SDGs of the United Nations. The curriculum is meant to be personal and adaptable. Along the way, learners may select what suits them and receive support—including mentoring and useful tools. CATALYST is creating a workforce ready to lead the way in making our societies greener, fairer, and more resilient with help from companies and teachers all throughout Europe.
