Abstract

Energy innovation projects rely on complex demonstration activities to validate integrated technologies and interoperability among diverse stakeholders. However, these demonstration scenarios are often described using heterogeneous formats that limit their reproducibility and interoperability. This paper proposes the use of a single methodology to define the technological scenarios in innovation projects from the design of functionalities to their evaluation and testing, ensuring greater consistency, coordination between stakeholders and traceability among the different phases. In particular, the presented framework is an adaptation of the IEC 62559–2:2015 standard for defining demonstration scenarios within the InterPED project. While IEC 62559 is traditionally employed to describe use cases in Smart Grids or interoperable energy systems development, its structured approach has proven valuable utility for demonstration scenario definition, objectives validation, experimental constraints, and configurations consideration. The proposed framework ensures methodological consistency, facilitates stakeholder coordination, and enhances traceability between design and validation phases. An example from InterPED illustrates the practical application of this approach. The paper concludes by discussing benefits, limitations, and future directions for systematic standard-based demonstration frameworks in energy innovation projects.

Plain Language Summary

Energy innovation projects often test new technologies in real buildings, districts or energy communities. However, each project usually describes its demonstration activities in a different way, making it difficult to compare results or reuse knowledge. This paper proposes a unified method to describe these demonstrations using an adaptation of the IEC 62559–2 standard, which is normally used to define use cases in smart grid design.

The idea is simple: if all projects describe their objectives, actors, conditions and performance indicators in the same structured format, their demonstrations become easier to understand, replicate and evaluate. The paper shows how this standard was adapted in the InterPED project, which develops tools to optimise energy use at district level. The adapted method focuses on what needs to be validated, how it will be measured, and which practical constraints must be considered in real environments.

The approach also integrates the IPMVP methodology to calculate KPIs in a transparent and comparable way. An example scenario from InterPED illustrates how forecasting tools, optimisation algorithms and predictive controllers interact during a demonstration.

Overall, the paper argues that using a standardised structure improves coordination among partners, strengthens traceability from design to validation, and supports reproducibility across European energy projects.

Grant information

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101138047 (INTERoperable cloud-based solution for cross-vector planning and management of Positive Energy Districts [InterPED]). The project aims to bolster PEDs by integrating renewable energy sources, storage, and waste heat to enhance their efficiency and grid stability. The project will deliver a scalable, cloud-based platform equipped with analytical, modelling, and optimisation services tailored for integrated PEDs, encompassing power, heating, cooling, and mobility systems [2].
