Abstract

The “Future_Global_AI_PET Database” provides high-resolution (30 arc-seconds) average annual and monthly global estimates of potential evapotranspiration (PET) and aridity index (AI) for 22 CMIP6 Earth System Models for two future (2021–2041; 2041–2060) and two historical (1960–1990; 1970–2000) time periods, for each of four shared socio-economic pathways (SSP). Three multimodel ensemble averages are also provided (All; Majority Consensus, High Risk) with different level of risks linked to climate model uncertainty. An overview of the methodological approach, geospatial implementation and a technical evaluation of the results is provided. Historical results were compared for technical validation with weather station data ( PET: r 2 = 0 .72; AI: r 2 = 0.91) and the CRU_TS v 4.04 dataset ( PET: r 2 = 0 .67; AI: r 2 = 0 .80). Within the context of projected significant change in the near- and medium-term, the “Future_Global_AI_PET Database” provides a set of data projections and tools available for a variety of scientific and practical applications, illustrating trends and magnitude of predicted climatic and eco-hydrological impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. The Future_Global_AI_PET Database is archived in the ScienceDB repository and available online at: https://doi.org/10.57760/sciencedb.nbsdc.00086

Revised

Amendment

1. Regression Analysis Updates
Figures 9 and 10 were revised to remove forced regression through zero, aligning with statistical best practices. Table 5 was revised and updated to reduce confusion and highlight only the relevant statistics.
2. Expanded PET Methods Description
Equations for all PET methods used in the study were added. A discussion on the limitations of applying correction factors for Hargreaves PET under future climate conditions was included.
3. Clarification of CMIP6 Models Used
The discrepancy in the number of CMIP6 models available in WorldClim was explained. A revised link to the full dataset was provided.
4. Terminology Consistency
•“Potential Evapotranspiration (PET)” and “Reference Evapotranspiration (ET₀)” are now used consistently to prevent confusion. The dataset is uniformly referred to as “Future_Global_AI_PET” throughout the manuscript.
5. Structural Improvements for Readability
The order of dataset comparisons was refined for clarity.
6. Validation of CMIP6 ESMs for Future Projections
A discussion was added to acknowledge the need for evaluating CMIP6 models’ reliability in future aridity and PET indices.
7. Justification for Time Period Selection
The choice of focusing on 2021-2041 and 2041-2061 rather than later periods was clarified based on computational constraints and increasing ESM uncertainty over longer timeframes.
8. Clarifications on AI and PET Calculations
The AI calculation methodology was detailed with references to how future PET and AI were derived. The choice of Hargreaves was further justified.
9. Addressing Model Calibration and Uncertainty
Discussion on local calibration of Hargreaves PET was expanded, acknowledging past studies while explaining challenges in applying static correction factors to future climate scenarios. The value of integrating climate-explicit correction factors was highlighted as a potential future improvement.
10. Integration of Additional References
References to recent studies on PET model calibration, aridity indices, and evapotranspiration modeling were incorporated.
