Abstract

As mobile networks evolve towards 6G, sustainability must be a central focus to address the environmental impacts of increasing energy consumption and resource use. This open letter highlights insights from the "Towards Sustainable 6G" workshop, where seven EU-funded projects - 6G4Society, BeGREEN, COALESCE, IN2CCAM, CENTRIC, 6Green, and 6G-TWIN - showcased innovative solutions for integrating energy efficiency, renewable energy, and ecological resilience into next-generation mobile networks. The projects emphasize AI-driven optimisation, sustainable infrastructure design, and cross-disciplinary collaboration as key strategies for reducing the ecological footprint of 6G systems. A joint statement underscores the necessity of embedding sustainability into 6G design, with follow-up activities planned to advance green telecommunications.

Amendment

The revised version of the open letter addresses reviewers’ comments by clarifying the scope, early results, and sustainability framing of the seven EU-funded projects presented in the “Towards Sustainable 6G” workshop. For each project, we have added concise highlights of initial achievements and demonstrators. The text now explicitly positions environmental, social, and economic dimensions within established frameworks, including the triple bottom line, UN SDGs, ITU-R M.2160, and BEREC indicators, while acknowledging remaining gaps and priorities. The joint statement on sustainability has been reworked to clearly reflect current project activities rather than a comprehensive framework, emphasising which dimensions are addressed and which require further work. We also briefly discuss technological and organisational challenges, interdependencies among projects, and risk management strategies. Finally, the recommendations have been updated to stress interdisciplinary collaboration, shared metrics, open experimentation, and adaptability to incorporate new research groups or emerging technologies.
