Abstract

Background

The introduction of the Internet of Things (IoT) has created new opportunities for servitization in manufacturing, enabling equipment providers to deliver digital services that enhance product performance and customer value. Among these, Condition Monitoring Services (CMS) have gained prominence, particularly with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) as a means to remotely monitor machinery, predict failures, and optimize maintenance. However, despite the technical maturity of these solutions, many OEMs struggle to translate CMS into sustainable business value.

Methods

This study draws on qualitative insights gathered through semi-structured interviews with 13 industry experts and academic researchers actively involved in designing, deploying, and studying CMS in manufacturing. A thematic analysis was conducted to identify recurring challenges and success factors in the commercialization and implementation of CMS.

Results

Findings reveal that while IoT infrastructure is a necessary enabler, CMS success hinges on the development of complementary organizational capabilities. These include service-oriented business design, alignment of internal processes, and the co-creation of value with customers. A lack of standardized performance metrics, uncertainty around data ownership, and difficulties in building trust with clients were identified as key barriers. The study offers actionable recommendations to address these issues, including the use of transparent accountability mechanisms and adaptive service development strategies.

Conclusions

This research advances the understanding of digital servitization in manufacturing by focusing specifically on the real-world implementation of CMS. It highlights the importance of integrating technological capabilities with strategic and organizational readiness. By presenting grounded insights from expert perspectives, the study provides practical guidance for OEMs aiming to transition from product-centric to service-oriented business models in the era of industrial IoT.
